This vintage Japanese ship statue is modeled as a shallow-hulled boat, richly decorated in underglaze cobalt on a warm white ground. Waves, stylized clouds and dotted sprays dance along the sides of the hull, while the prow and stern are framed by bold geometric borders that recall classic sometsuke (blue-and-white) porcelain. A low balustrade runs the deck, giving the piece an architectural presence and a pleasing silhouette from every angle.
