Showa-era kiri sewing chest with striking faux-zelkova grain and ingenious hidden storage.

This compact Japanese sewing box, or haribako, embodies the practical elegance of mid-Showa interiors. The exterior is finished in a rich, dark woodgrain veneer that recalls keyaki (zelkova), contrasted with the warm natural interior of the drawers. Multiple graduated drawers on the front, a sliding side drawer, and a lift-top compartment provide orderly storage for threads, needles, and small tools.

Beneath the hinged lid sits a removable tray with divided sections and a central covered well, originally used for sewing notions but equally suited to jewelry or desk accessories today. Discreet metal pulls and clean rectilinear lines give this vintage piece a timeless, tansu-like presence, making it a functional accent for either a traditional washitsu or a modern studio.
