Vintage Japanese Sewing Box (SKU 25D-448)

Showa-era kiri sewing chest with striking burl veneer and multi-drawer storage.

This compact Japanese sewing box, or haribako, dates to the early 20th century and showcases a beautiful burl wood veneer across its façade and lid. The swirling grain patterns lend warmth and movement to the clean, rectilinear form, softened by gently rounded front corners and understated metal pulls.

Designed for orderly storage of sewing tools and threads, the chest offers a hinged top compartment with interior dividers and a practical arrangement of graduated drawers. Its modest scale makes it ideal today as a tabletop tansu for jewelry, stationery, or keepsakes, bringing Showa-period craftsmanship and a subtle Art Deco sensibility into contemporary interiors.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
