Vintage Japanese Sewing Box (SKU 25D-059-2)

Showa-era lacquered sewing and vanity box with bold carved botan motif

This striking vintage Japanese sewing box combines practical storage with the dramatic beauty of carved lacquer. The exterior is finished in a deep oxblood red and black, the surfaces hand-carved in relief with an exuberant botan (peony) on the front and an all-over scale-like pattern that catches the light. A curved handle and small brass clasp complete the compact, portable form, echoing the elegance of mid-Showa domestic design.

Inside, the hinged lid reveals a fitted mirror, transforming the piece into a small kishōdai-style vanity, while the main compartment and lower drawer offer organized space for sewing notions, jewelry, or keepsakes. Warm patina to the hardware and gentle wear to the lacquer attest to its age and quiet use, making this an ideal accent for a dressing table, craft corner, or Japanese-inspired interior.

A refined Showa-era piece that brings both Japanese craftsmanship and everyday functionality to your space.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
