Vintage Japanese Haribako Sewing Box, Showa Era (SKU 25D-245)

Showa-era tansu-style itomono bako with rich quarter-sawn grain and iron pulls

This compact Japanese sewing box is crafted in the manner of a miniature tansu chest, with three practical drawers and a hinged top compartment. The front panels display striking, figured grain that recalls keyaki (zelkova) cabinetry, complemented by simple iron warabite-style handles that add a quiet, utilitarian elegance.

Originally used to store thread, needles, and small tools for sashiko and daily mending, it now serves beautifully as a desktop organizer, jewelry chest, or keepsake box. The warm, honey-brown finish and visible joinery give it the gentle patina of an authentic vintage piece, making it an easy accent for both traditional Japanese interiors and modern wabi-sabi spaces.

A refined, functional accent that brings the quiet charm of a Showa-era sewing chest into everyday use.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
