Showa-era wooden komebitsu with iron bands and original shop markings
Crafted in Japan in the early Showa period, this substantial cylindrical rice container, or komebitsu, is built from vertical staves of warm-toned softwood secured by hand-riveted iron bands. The gently burnished surface, visible grain, and rich patina of the metalwork speak to decades of careful use in a traditional rice merchant’s shop or storeroom.
Dual iron side handles make the vessel easy to lift and re-position, while carved kanji inscriptions on the body record its original commercial use and maker. Today, this vintage Japanese rice container offers striking sculptural presence as a floor vessel, log bin, or planter sleeve, bringing authentic Showa-era character to contemporary interiors.
A handsome, utilitarian relic of everyday Showa Japan, ready to lend depth and authenticity to any interior.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
