This is a vintage Japanese wooden lacquer tray shaped in Tai, red snapper from early Showa period (1920's-1940's).

The red snapper is a very special fish to the Japanese since is auspicous and used often for special occasion.

Tai fish is nicely rolled to make a round shape and it looks like it just came out from the water.
