Vintage Japanese Pot (SKU 25D-321-4)

Showa-era studio tsubo with flowing ash-glaze in earthy brown and celadon tones

This rounded vintage Japanese pot is a handsome example of late Showa mingei-inspired studio ware. The full, tsubo-like form is coated in a rich iron-brown glaze, over which a pale blue-green ash glaze has been allowed to cascade, creating soft drips and pooled areas that recall mountain landscapes in mist. The small mouth and generous body give it a strong, grounded presence despite its modest size.

Stamped marks on the unglazed foot ring attest to kiln production, while the visible throwing rings and subtle glaze variations speak to hand-crafted origin. Ideal as a simple ikebana vase for a single branch or seasonal grasses, it also stands beautifully on its own as a piece of 1980s Showa-era Japanese pottery with warm, organic character.

  • Origin: Japan, studio kiln (stamped base)
  • Era: Late Showa period, circa 1980s
  • Material: Stoneware with iron and ash glazes
  • Use: Decorative tsubo-style pot or small ikebana / flower vase
  • Features: Rounded tsubo form; glossy brown ground with flowing celadon ash glaze; visible potter’s stamps on foot; classic 1980s Showa-era Japanese pottery aesthetic
  • Dimensions: 5 1/2" Diameter x 5 1/2"H
  • Condition: Excellent, with light kiln marks and natural glaze variations typical of handmade ware

A quietly striking piece that brings the warmth of Japanese studio ceramics and the spirit of mingei craft to any interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
