Vintage Japanese Obi, Showa Era (SKU 25S-547-16)

Showa-era fukuro obi with cranes, chrysanthemums and fan motifs in softly shimmering brocade

This vintage Japanese obi is richly woven on a warm ivory ground with auspicious motifs that evoke a classical courtly garden. Elegant cranes (tsuru) glide among full chrysanthemum (kiku) blooms, stylised pines and sprays of seasonal flowers, all rendered in dense silk and metallic threads. The design is punctuated by folding fans (sensu) and a distant pavilion landscape, creating the feeling of a layered kimono screen.

Likely made as a formal fukuro obi for occasions such as weddings or festive ceremonies, it combines refined Showa-period colour sensibilities with traditional Nishijin-style weaving. The balanced palette of rust red, persimmon, moss green, navy and gold makes this piece ideal not only for wearing with kimono, but also for upcycling into obi art panels, cushions or textile displays that highlight the depth of the brocade.

  • Origin: Japan, likely Nishijin weaving district, Kyoto
