Vintage Japanese Manjushri With Lion Statue, Showa Era (SKU 25D-475)

Expressive hand-carved wooden image of Monju Bosatsu astride a roaring lion mount

This powerful vintage Japanese statue depicts Manjushri (Monju Bosatsu), bodhisattva of wisdom, seated in calm meditation upon a ferocious lion. Expertly carved from a single block of natural wood, the sculptor has contrasted the serene, rounded features of the deity with the dynamic musculature and swirling mane of the lion, capturing the classical iconography of Monju’s shishi mount in three-dimensional detail. The bodhisattva holds a sutra volume and a small vessel, symbols of scriptural wisdom and compassionate aid.

Flame-like mandorla elements rise behind the figure, evoking sacred light and adding vertical movement to the composition. The unfinished surface allows the warm grain of the timber to show through, giving the work an earthy, temple-like presence well suited to a butsudan, alcove (tokonoma), or contemplative corner. Natural age cracks, small losses to the flames, and minor wear to the carving all contribute to the statue’s vintage character while leaving the overall form strong and display-ready.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
