Vintage Japanese Lion Statue (SKU 25D-270-4)

Showa-era blue-and-white ceramic shishi guardian with powerful sculptural presence

This vintage Japanese lion-dog, or shishi / komainu, is modeled in a dynamic seated pose, its muscular body and arched back capturing the alert stance of a temple guardian. The creamy porcelain body is accented with hand-painted underglaze cobalt, creating a dramatic contrast that emphasizes the creature’s sinewy legs, ribcage and curled tail.

The swirling blue mane, rendered in bold brushwork, recalls classic Arita and Seto blue-and-white ceramics from the mid-Showa period, while the fierce expression and open mouth suggest a protective, auspicious presence in the home. Displayed on an entry console, tokonoma alcove, or as a focal point in an eclectic interior, this vintage Japanese lion statue brings both sculptural impact and traditional symbolism of protection and good fortune.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
