Showa-era cast iron hanging lantern with bold openwork crest design
This vintage Japanese lantern, crafted in heavy cast iron, features richly textured surfaces and dramatic openwork panels. The rounded body rests on three small feet and is crowned with a solid finial and original hanging chain, allowing it to be suspended from an eave, garden post, or interior beam in the traditional manner.
The pierced motif evokes a stylized mon (family crest) framed by foliage, casting intricate shadows when illuminated. Originally made for candle or oil light, the interior now includes a simple socket, and electrical wiring can be installed to adapt the piece for contemporary use while preserving its wabi-sabi patina and authentic Showa character.
A characterful Showa lantern that brings authentic Japanese atmosphere and sculptural presence to any space.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
