This is a 3 section vintage Japanese lacquer Sado Kasane Tansu from Late Meiji (1890's-1910's). Used for the storage of Kimono, its substantial capacity was overshadowed by its beautiful design.
It was made in the famous tansu making town of Sado situated in northern Japan which was well known for their decorative and creative heavy metal craftmanship.
It was constructed out of Cryptomeria (Suginoki) woods and the iron lock plates incorporate the auspicious bronze design.
The sections can be separated for versatility allowing for use in different rooms of a home or displayed side by side under a large window sill.
