Vintage Japanese Tea Chest/Cabinet With Aka Sabi Red Frame Kannon Biraki Door Black Shelves Floral Motif, Lacquer, 1930s, Showa Era (SKU 25D-C020)

Showa-era style mizuya / chadansu (Tea Chest) with rich aka sabi frame, Kannon biraki doors, and elegant floral maki-e decoration.

This vintage Japanese lacquer cabinet combines a deep black urushi-style finish with an aka sabi red frame, creating a striking contrast typical of mid-Showa design. The open tiered shelves, gently upturned top, and carved side rails give it the light, architectural feeling of a small chadansu, ideal for displaying tea utensils, ceramics, or seasonal objects in a tokonoma or living space.

Below, a pair of Kannon biraki doors opens to reveal enclosed storage, their fronts adorned with a refined floral motif evoking autumn grasses and berries, accented with subtle metallic details. A smoothly running side drawer in natural wood adds practical storage while preserving the cabinet’s clean, horizontal lines. Versatile as a tea cabinet, sideboard, or compact mizuya in a modern interior, it offers both decorative presence and everyday usability.

A refined yet practical Showa lacquer cabinet that brings the warmth of traditional Japanese craftsmanship into contemporary living.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
