Vintage Japanese Box, Lacquer (SKU 25D-399)

Showa-era stacked lacquer food box set with pine grove maki-e decoration

This vintage Japanese lacquer box ensemble comprises three rounded-tier containers housed in a fitted wooden case. Each dark, lustrous tier is decorated in fine gold-colored maki-e style with an overlapping landscape of stylized pine trees (matsu) and gently sweeping grasses, evoking a tranquil seashore grove often associated with longevity and good fortune in Japanese culture.

Likely used as a jubako-style food box for special occasions, the set reflects mid-20th-century Showa craftsmanship, balancing practical construction with refined decorative detail. The outer wooden case shows a warm, time-softened patina that contrasts beautifully with the sleek lacquer tiers inside, making this piece equally suited to display or light, respectful use in a contemporary interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
