This is an authentic vintage Japanese Kutani Shishi figurine from the mid 1900's.
Shishi is translated as "lion” but it can also refer to a deer or dog with magical properties and the power to repel evil spirits. It is from Kutani which a famous kiln region in the village of Kutani, now part of the city of Kaga.
Shishi is standing on two feet holding a large Mari ball in its front paws. He opens jaws showing fangs, and his body is covered with amazing curly swirled hairs.
This porcelain style is known for multiple colors—such as greens, blues, yellows, purples, and reds—and bold designs covering most of the surface; however, unlike traditional Kutani ware this piece is mostly purple with dramatic face and body which makes it truly special and unique.
