Vintage Japanese Kutani Lion (SKU 25D-004)
Bold Showa-era Kutani shishi guardian with rich overglaze enamels and peony ball motif
This powerful shishi (lion dog) figure captures the exuberant spirit of late 20th-century Kutani ware, with a deep aubergine body, vivid emerald mane and tail, and accents of mustard yellow and celadon. Striding forward with bared fangs and alert eyes, the guardian rests one paw on a richly modelled ball decorated in high relief with a peony blossom, symbol of prosperity and protection in Japanese art.
The glossy glaze, swirling mane and tail, and crisp moulded details are typical of Showa-era decorative ceramics, making this a striking vintage accent for a tokonoma alcove, entryway, or display shelf. Equally at home in a focused Kutani collection or as a single statement piece, this lion exudes both charm and authority, embodying the traditional role of shishi as guardians of the household.
