Vintage Japanese Kutani Shishi Lion, Showa Era (SKU 25D-012)

Showa-era Kutani porcelain shishi guardian lion with richly gilded brocade ball

This dynamic vintage Kutani shishi (guardian lion-dog) captures the bold, exuberant spirit of mid-Showa Japanese ceramics. Modelled with an open-mouthed roar and powerful stance, the lion rests one clawed paw on a pierced brocade ball, a classic symbol of protection and playful energy in shrine and temple iconography. The body is covered in a textured, scale-like ground of deep iron red, punctuated by circular medallions and raised gilt accents that catch the light from every angle.

Typical of Kutani ware, lavish overglaze enamels in red, green, and blue are combined with generous applications of real gold to create a luxurious surface. The swirling golden mane and flame-like tail are sculpted in high relief, while the brocade ball is intricately decorated and pierced, suggesting use as an incense burner or lamp shade in addition to being a striking display piece. This vintage Japanese Kutani lion is an eye-catching focal point for an alcove, tokonoma, or modern interior with a taste for statement ceramics.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
