Vintage Japanese Lion Statue, Showa Era (SKU 25D-270-3)

Showa-era glazed ceramic shishi guardian with playful cubs and openwork ball

This expressive vintage Japanese lion statue depicts a powerful shishi (also called komainu) standing protectively over a pierced decorative ball while two lively cubs tumble at its feet. Finished in a soft, pale grey glaze with a subtle celadon tone, the piece captures the spirited energy of traditional temple guardians in a compact, display-friendly form.

Crisp modeling highlights the swirling mane, curled tail, and animated faces, while the reticulated ball suggests movement and lightness, evoking classic incense burner and okimono designs of the mid-20th century. A charming fusion of protection and play, it brings an auspicious presence to an entryway, tokonoma alcove, or curated collection of Showa-era ceramics.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
