Vintage Japanese Komainu Lion Statue, Showa Era (SKU 25D-270-1)
Showa-era ceramic pair of guardian lion-dogs with expressive faces and rich olive glaze
This vintage Japanese pair of guardian lions, or shishi / komainu, captures the spirited charm of mid-20th-century folk ceramics. Modeled in a stout, almost playful stance, each lion is crowned with a luxuriant, curling mane and tail, finished in a flowing olive and celadon-toned glaze that pools beautifully along the contours of the bodies.
One lion displays an open mouth and the other closed, echoing the traditional “A–Un” motif of temple guardians that invite auspicious energy while warding off misfortune. Displayed on an entry console, tokonoma alcove, or modern shelf, this Showa-era pair adds an authentic Japanese accent and a sense of protective presence to any interior.
