This is an antique Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu from Late Meiji period (1910's). It was used to store letters, documents, books and other items for daily use.  Made of Paulownia (Kirinoki) and Persimmon (Kakinoki).

Paulownia wood is a light-weight wood with a strong and fine grain and a silky smooth finish and dark Persimmon wood gives a great accent to light color. It has a combination of sliding doors and multiple drawers.

Contemporary uses for this piece include placement on a desk for additional office storage, using this as an elegant side table or placing it next to a bed for the perfect nightstand.
