This is a vintage Japanese small tea chest called Ko Cha Tansu from early Showa (1920's-1940's). It was made from 100% Paulownia wood (Kirinoki).
Originally used for the storage of tea accoutrements for guest tea service, its contemporary function can be used as a side table or small chest to store personal belonging and display decorative items.
