The jizai kagi (自在鉤) is a traditional Japanese adjustable hearth hook designed for use above an irori (囲炉裏) — a sunken hearth that served as the central gathering and cooking area in traditional Japanese homes.

The jizai kagi was ingeniously crafted to suspend and adjust the height of a kettle, pot, or cooking vessel over the fire. Its lever mechanism allowed precise control of heat — lowering the pot for boiling or raising it to simmer — a perfect example of Japanese practicality and aesthetic refinement.

Beyond function, the jizai kagi carried symbolic meaning. Often adorned with auspicious motifs such as fish, gourds, or leaves, it was believed to bring good fortune, protection from fire, and household prosperity. The combination of bamboo, iron, and brass highlights the balance between natural materials and metal craftsmanship, blending rustic beauty with engineering ingenuity.

Today, these pieces are admired not only as tools of daily life but also as artifacts of Japanese cultural heritage, embodying the spirit of harmony between people, craft, and nature.
