Vintage Japanese Kettle, Iron (SKU 25D-428-1)

Showa-era tetsubin with finely ribbed body and chrysanthemum relief

This vintage Japanese iron kettle, or tetsubin, presents a beautifully balanced cylindrical form with a gently arched handle and classic straight spout. The body is encircled by tight horizontal ribbing, creating a refined contrast to the softly pebbled shoulder and lid. A rounded knop crowns the lid, echoing traditional cast-iron kettles used over the hearth for daily tea and hot water.

Around the midsection, delicate chrysanthemum blossoms and scrolling motifs are cast in low relief, adding a subtle decorative accent without disturbing the kettle’s quiet, utilitarian character. The interior shows natural patination from age and use, while the exterior retains a deep, even iron tone—ideal as a functional kyūsu-style water kettle or as an atmospheric piece for a Japanese tea corner or wabi-sabi display.

  • Origin: Japan
  • Era: Showa period (mid 20th century, circa 1950s)
  • Material: Cast iron

A characterful Showa tetsubin that brings the quiet warmth of Japanese tea culture to any space.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
