Vintage Japanese Koro Incense Burner (SKU 25D-489)

Charming Showa-era bronze koro in the playful form of a tanuki with detachable pierced lid

Cast in richly patinated bronze, this figural koro (incense burner) depicts a plump tanuki, the beloved raccoon dog of Japanese folklore, padding forward with bright inlaid eyes and a sweeping tail. The animal’s body supports a heavily textured “cloak” that forms the incense chamber, its surface worked in high relief to catch the light and deepen the warm brown patina.

The removable pierced lid allows fragrant smoke to drift gently from the tanuki’s back, making this an ideal piece for a small tokonoma display, a tea corner, or a dedicated incense collection. Signed to the underside, the work reflects the whimsical naturalism of late Showa–Showa metalwork, balancing humor with refined craftsmanship and a beautifully aged surface.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
