Vintage Japanese Hotei Statue, Showa Era (SKU 25D-129)

Smiling Showa-era Hotei, seated in relaxed ease with an uchiwa fan of good fortune.

This expressive vintage Hotei statue captures the beloved god of happiness in a casual, reclining pose, his ample belly and rounded cheeks radiating warmth. Cast in a deep, dark finish that recalls aged bronze, the figure wears flowing robes and holds an uchiwa fan, a traditional attribute symbolizing the granting of wishes and the spreading of good fortune in Japanese folk belief.

Inscribed on the reverse with a Showa date and maker’s name, this piece offers a charming glimpse into mid–20th century Japanese devotional art. The slightly rustic surface, soft modeling, and relaxed composition make it an inviting accent for a tokonoma alcove, home altar, or as a characterful focal point in any wabi-sabi inspired interior.

  • Origin: Japan
  • Era: Showa period (dated inscription)
  • Material: Dark patinated cast composition, in the manner of bronze
  • Use: Household shrine display, interior décor, Buddhist or folk talisman
  • Features: Reclining Hotei with uchiwa fan; joyful facial expression; flowing robes; hand-incised Showa-era inscription and maker’s name to the back; rich dark vintage patina
  • Dimensions: 14"W x 10"D x 8"H
  • Condition: Very good vintage condition with minor surface wear and small scuffs consistent with age and handling

A characterful Showa Hotei that brings an easy, timeworn sense of joy and prosperity to any space.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
