Hakone Yosegi Curved-Top Puzzle Box — Kiri Core, 1980s, Shōwa Era

Mountains of Kanagawa woven into a single arc

A gentle arch sweeps across the lid of this yosegi-zaiku box, as if the hills of Hakone had bowed to shelter your secrets. More than a dozen hardwood veneers—keyaki, kuri, sakura—are sliced paper-thin, arranged into classic asanoha, ichimatsu checks, and ryūsen waves, then pressed onto a light kiri (paulownia) body. Slide the hidden catch and a drawer glides out of the checkerboard façade; another motion lifts the lid to reveal a velvet-smooth chamber for rings, tea, or love letters.

Created in the late 1980s, when Shōwa artisans blended traditional patterns with modern forms, this box turns everyday storage into playful discovery. Each grain line is a contour map of Hakone’s forests, every geometric tessellation a tribute to ancestral patience.
