Vintage Japanese Gourd Shaped Tiered Box (SKU 25D-066)

Showa-era gourd-shaped tiered bento box with original kiri-wood tomobako and braided carrying net

Carved in the auspicious form of a hyōtan gourd, this vintage Japanese tiered box disassembles into a clever set of lacquered bowls. The exterior is finished in a warm reddish-brown lacquer over finely turned concentric rings, giving a tactile, almost woven appearance that echoes the traditional red cord net in which it is carried.

Likely made as a portable multi-tiered food or snack container, this piece combines playful design with practical function. The interior of each tier is finished in sleek black urushi-style lacquer, while the set is housed in its signed kiri (paulownia) wood tomobako storage box with fabric shoulder strap, making it ideal for display, use in a Japanese-inspired picnic or bento setting, or as a distinctive accent in a wabi-sabi interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
