Vintage Japanese Gourd Ikebana Flower Holder (SKU 25D-109-1)

Showa-era gourd-form lacquer piece with sculptural presence and warm, mottled patina

Shaped in the silhouette of a hanging hyōtan (gourd), this vintage Japanese piece combines folk charm with modernist lines. The exterior is finished in a deep, speckled reddish-brown lacquer that follows the natural curves and undulations of the form, preserving knots and dimples as part of its organic character.

An open front reveals a glossy black interior and a cylindrical red insert at the base, suggesting use as a small ikebana container or decorative vessel. Whether displayed alone as an objet d’art or used within a seasonal tokonoma arrangement, it brings a distinctly Showa-era sensibility to any space.

  • Origin: Japan
  • Era: Showa period, mid-20th century (vintage)
  • Material: Natural gourd with lacquer finish (urushi) and lacquered inner insert
  • Use: Decorative object, small ikebana vase or flower holder, tokonoma display

  • Dimensions: 11 1/2"W x 7"D x 20"H

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
