Vintage Japanese Gourd (SKU 25D-109-2)

Hand-carved gourd vessel with rich urushi-inspired patina

This vintage Japanese gourd has been carefully hollowed, cut, and finished to create a sculptural hanging container with a warm, timeworn presence. The exterior shows a deep, mottled chocolate-brown surface reminiscent of old urushi lacquer, while the interior glows in a burnt-orange tone that highlights the natural texture of the dried gourd shell.

A simple wrapped loop at the top allows the piece to be hung as a wall-mounted vase or small storage vessel, in the spirit of rustic minka interiors and tea-room kake-monoire containers. Weathering, surface wear, and an old repair around the mouth give this Showa-era piece an appealing wabi-sabi character that pairs beautifully with branches, dried flowers, or as a stand-alone folk-art object.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
