This two-section mizuya tansu (kitchen chest) is a refined example of traditional Japanese design, crafted from hinoki (Japanese cypress) wood. Likely dating back to the early 20th century, it exudes the natural elegance and practicality characteristic of Japanese craftsmanship.

The top section features a set of original glass sliding doors with removable shelves inside, making it ideal for showcasing dishware or other items while protecting them from dust.
The bottom section includes a set of sliding wooden doors and three small drawers, offering practical storage for utensils, cookware, or other kitchen essentials.

Mizuya tansu were integral to the traditional Japanese kitchen, where every element was designed with space efficiency and organization in mind. These chests provided discreet and accessible storage for cooking and dining tools. Sliding doors were favored for their space-saving qualities, and removable shelves offered adaptability to suit varying needs.

The use of hinoki wood not only added durability and a natural resistance to moisture but also imbued these chests with a soft fragrance that was especially valued in homes. The inclusion of glass in the top section reflects evolving design preferences during the Taisho and early Showa eras, as the use of glass became more common in Japan.

This beautifully aged mizuya tansu retains its original glass panels, offering a rare glimpse into the evolving aesthetics of Japanese kitchen furniture. Its timeless design and functional layout make it both a practical addition to modern living spaces and a cherished piece of history.
