Vintage Japanese Chabudai Folding Table, Showa Era (SKU 25D-226)

Showa-era vermilion and black lacquer chabudai with fold-away legs

This vintage Japanese folding table, or chabudai, features a striking vermilion-red lacquer top enlivened with an abstract black and gold mottled pattern. The subtly curved square form and gently flared legs give it an elegant low profile, ideal for floor seating in a traditional tatami room or as a distinctive accent table in a contemporary space.

Beneath, the black-lacquered wooden frame reveals well-crafted folding legs that tuck neatly into the underside for compact storage. Timeworn patina, small chips, and surface wear to the lacquer add authentic Showa-period character, making this piece as evocative as it is practical for tea service, display, or use as a low coffee table.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
