This vintage Japanese flower basket is a beautifully balanced example of mid-Showa era hanakago work. Slender smoked bamboo strips are woven in a lively openwork lattice, swelling gently to a rounded body that cradles the removable bamboo cylinder for water and flowers. The dark, warm patina of the bamboo contrasts softly with the pale natural liner, creating an elegant stage for seasonal ikebana.

A tall, arched handle rises gracefully from both sides, secured with intricate knotwork bindings that showcase the maker’s skill. The rim is finished in a tight, overlapping braid that adds strength while giving a refined, modernist accent typical of 1970s Showa design. Still housed in its original patterned paper box, this basket is ideal for chabana beside the tokonoma, or as a sculptural object in a contemporary interior.
