Vintage Japanese Bamboo Flower Basket, Showa Era (SKU 25D-265-3)

Showa-era kago for ikebana with original tomobako storage box

This vintage Japanese flower basket is a finely woven hanakago designed for ikebana display. The body flares gently from a square base to a circular mouth, its warm bamboo strips interlaced in a dynamic, crisscross pattern that catches the light and adds depth to seasonal arrangements.

A tall, sculptural handle in darker bamboo, secured with traditional rattan knots, frames the piece and gives it a strong architectural presence. Inside sits a removable black lacquered cylinder to hold water and flowers, making the basket both decorative and practical for chabana or alcove display. The piece is accompanied by its signed tomobako, underscoring its status as a carefully crafted Showa-era work.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
