Vintage Japanese Ikebana Flower Basket (SKU 25D-259)

Sculptural bamboo kago for ikebana with dramatic openwork weave and signed interior frame

This vintage Japanese flower basket is a striking example of mid-Showa bamboo artistry, woven in a dynamic, spherical kago form. Broad, warm-toned bamboo strips intersect in bold diagonals, while darker, twisted strands spiral around the body, creating a sense of movement and depth that beautifully frames seasonal branches and flowers.

Inside the openwork shell, a geometric lattice with star-like patterns supports a removable dark-stained bamboo cylinder for holding a glass or metal liner, in keeping with traditional ikebana practice. An inscribed signature on one of the inner supports adds a personal touch from the maker, making this a distinctive piece for tokonoma display or a refined wabi-sabi interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
