Antique Japanese Kotatsu Frame, Wood, 1980s, Showa Era (SKU 25S-343)
Showa-era wooden kotatsu frame with simple, honest joinery and warm aged patina
This antique Japanese kotatsu frame dates to the Showa period and showcases the understated practicality of everyday mingei design. Crafted from solid wood with a light, honey-toned finish, the open slatted top was originally made to support a brazier box and quilt, creating a low heated table for winter living.
Clean lines, square rails, and exposed mortise-and-tenon joints give the piece a quiet architectural presence, making it easy to repurpose as a low display stand, plant table, or sculptural accent in a wabi-sabi interior. The surface shows gentle wear and color variation from age and use, adding character without compromising stability.
