This a vintage 1 section Japanese tea chest called Cha Tansu from Taisho period (1910's-1902's). It was constructed out of Japanese Tamo Ash (known as Toneriko in Japan), Horse chestnut (Tochinoki) and Paulownia (Kirinoki) and other woods.
It has nice cut-out on the both side and comes with various size of compartment.
Tea chests were traditionally kept in the multi purpose room of a Japanese house. This room is where guests would relax and the chest would house accoutrements for tea service as well as display seasonal and special occasion decorative items on the open shelves.
