This is a vintage Japanese tea chest called Cha Tansu from Taisho period (1910's-1920's). It was made from Horse Chestnuts (Tochinoki), Chestnuts (Kurinoki) and Cryptomeria (Suginoki) woods. The sliding doors have interesting textures and nice cut-out on the side.
Tea chests were traditionally kept in the multi purpose room of a Japanese house. This room is where guests would relax and the chest would house accoutrements for tea service as well as display seasonal and special occasion decorative items on the open shelves.
