This is a vintage Japanese 1 section Cha Dansu, tea chest from the early Showa period (1940's). The woods that are used in this tansu are Paulownia (Kirinoki), Horse chestnut (Tochinoki) and other woods.
In your living room, the combination of shelves, drawers, and sliding drawers make it perfect for entertainment accessories as well as a great accent piece.
Originally the Cha Dansu was situated in the room used to entertain guests (similar to the western living room). The shelves behind the glass doors were used to display collections related to seasonal, holiday, or milestone celebrations such as birthdays, anniversaries, Boy's Day, Girl's Day, and New Year's Day. The rest of the chest stored tea serving accoutrements, dishes, and serving utensils used to provide the guests.
