This is a vintage 1 section Japanese Cha Tansu, tea chest from Taisho period (1910's-1920's).
It is made of Japanese Ash (Tamonoki), Horse Chestnut wood (Tochinoki) case and Paulownia wood (Kirinoki). Typically used in the guest entertaining room of the house, the open area in the middle allows for an area where displays can be changed based on the seasons or special holiday celebrations.
The shallow and short dimension of this tansu allows for placement in even the most narrow of hallways or entryways.
