This is a vintage Japanese 2 section tea chest called Cha Tansu from Taisho period (1910's-1920').  It was constructed out of Zekova (Keyaki) and Paulownia (Kirinoki) woods.

Tea chest often is made of Horse chestnuts on the frame but this is made of all Zelkova wood showing incredible wooden grains.

The tea chest was typically used in a Japanese home in the room similar to the western living room.  It was used to keep items for casual tea service as well as storage for an assortment of items for the home.  The display area was designed to showcase seasonal or holiday decorative accents such as flower arrangements for the change of season or dolls for Boy's (Children's) Day or Girl's Day festivals.
