This a vintage 2 section Japanese tea chest called Cha Tansu from Taisho period (1910's-1920's).
It was constructed out of Maple (Momiji), Horse chestnut (Tochinoki) and Paulownia (Kirinoki) woods.
It has the beautiful grain pattern displaying the maple wood, and the cloud-like design of the display shelf, also it has the decorative Pine tree cut-out in the supporting wood frame.
The tea chest was typically used in a Japanese home in the room similar to the western living room. It was used to keep items for casual tea service as well as storage for an assortment of items for the home. The display area was designed to showcase seasonal or holiday decorative accents such as flower arrangements for the change of season or dolls for Boy's (Children's) Day or Girl's Day festivals.
