This is a vintage Japanese 2 section Cha Tansu, tea chest from Taisho period (1910's-1920's).
It is made of Maple (Momiji), Horse Chestnut wood (Tochinoki) case and Paulownia wood (Kirinoki). Typically used in the guest entertaining room of the house.
The shallow dimension of this tansu allows for placement in even the most narrow of hallways or entryways.
