This is a vintage 1 section Japanese tea chest called Cha Tansu from Taisho (1910's-1920's).  It was constructed out of Maple (Momiji) in the front, Horse Chestnut (Tochinoki) and Paulownia (Kirinoki) woods.

The tea chest was typically used in a Japanese home in the room similar to the western living room.  It was used to keep items for casual tea service as well as storage for an assortment of items for the home. Not like a typical Cha tansu, it does not have a glass door so it is perfect to store things without being seen from outside, also ideal to have various size of storages.
