This a vintage 1 section Japanese tea chest called Cha Tansu from Taisho (1910's-1902's). It was constructed out of Japanese Persimmon (Kakinoki), Horse chestnut (Tochinoki) and Paulownia (Kirinoki) woods.
The tea chest was typically used in a Japanese home in the room similar to the western living room. It was used to keep items for casual tea service as well as storage for an assortment of items for the home. Not like a regular tea chest, it does not come with a glass door so you can store anything without being seen.
