This a vintage Japanese 2 section tea chest called Cha Tansu from Taisho (1910's-1920's).  It was constructed out of Japanese Maple (Momiji), Horse chestnut (Tochinoki) and Paulownia (Kirinoki) woods.

The tea chest was typically used in a Japanese home in the room similar to the western living room.  It was used to keep items for casual tea service as well as storage for an assortment of items for the home. The display area was designed to showcase seasonal or holiday decorative accents such as flower arrangements for the change of season or dolls for Boy's (Children's) Day or Girl's Day festivals.

It features beveled glass on its main display doors, a mini Tokonoma (tea ceremony alcove), a pair of sliding doors and Shoji style panel on the back, nice details throughout.
