This is a vintage Japanese 2 section tea chest called Cha Tansu from Taisho period (1910's-1920's). It was constructed out of Momiji (Maple), Tochinoki (Horse chestnuts) and Kiri (Paulownia) woods.
The tea chest was typically used in a Japanese home in the room similar to the western living room. It was used to keep items for casual tea service as well as storage for an assortment of items for the home. The display area was designed to showcase seasonal or holiday decorative accents such as flower arrangements for the change of season or collections of tea utensiles.
