Vintage Japanese Suiteki Calligraphy Water Dropper, 1930s, Showa Era (SKU 25D-456)

Charming hand-formed ceramic suiteki for traditional Japanese calligraphy practice.

This small vintage suiteki (water dropper) is modeled as a seated figure wrapped in a dark cloak, cradling a bright red vessel at the front. Richly glazed in black, red, and earthy browns with touches of gold, it brings a playful yet contemplative presence to the calligrapher’s desk, echoing the intimate scale of sumi-e and shodō tools.

Water is filled from the opening at the top and released in controlled drops through the twin spouts at the front, allowing precise dilution of ink on the stone. A lovely example of Showa-era studio pottery, this piece works equally well as a functional calligraphy accessory or as a whimsical accent in a scholar’s display of Japanese ceramics.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
