Vintage Japanese Calendar 1979, Showa Era (SKU 26M-HSATO1979)

Colorful katazome-style calendar from Showa 54, in the playful folk-art spirit of Keisuke Serizawa

This vintage 1979 Japanese calendar is printed on soft washi, each month designed with bold, hand-cut forms and lively colors that recall the celebrated katazome stencil work of Keisuke Serizawa. The set is housed in its original speckled paper folder, decorated with a smiling face and the year “1979,” giving the whole ensemble the warmth of mingei (folk craft) design.

Each sheet combines Western month names with Japanese numerals and seasonal motifs—rising sun and pines for January, peonies for May, seashells and waves for August, and a doll-like figure for December—making the calendar ideal for framing as twelve individual prints. The slightly irregular lines and saturated pigments create a charming hand-printed feel, perfect for collectors of Showa-era graphics and Japanese folk art.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
