Vintage Japanese Brass Monkey Statue - 1980s Heisei Era (25D-280)

Finely cast Showa-era brass of a scholarly monkey with inrō and book

This charming Japanese brass okimono depicts a monkey seated in quiet concentration, dressed in a short haori patterned with gilt maple leaves and a single peach at the back. With one hand he adjusts his eye, while the other cradles a tiny mask-like figure suspended from an inrō resting by his feet, all set upon an oval base detailed with a spread book and richly decorated border.

The crisp hair-work, soft modelling of the face and delicately incised foliage on the inrō reflect the high standard of late 20th-century bronze casting in Japan. Warm brown patination, highlighted with gold-toned details and a continuous frieze of stylised animals around the base, make this Showa-era statue an engaging focal point for a tokonoma, study or curated collection of Japanese brass sculpture.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
